The Guitar San Antonio International Artist Series presents 2021 GFA International Ensemble Competition winner The Salzburg Guitar Trio live at Colonial Hills United Methodist Church on Sunday Feb. 5, 2023 at 7:00pm. Admission is free. A $15 donation is encouraged.
Salzburg Guitar Trio
Internationally recognized as one of the leading guitar ensembles of today, the Salzburg Guitar Trio engages its audiences with their energetic presence and deeply emotional performances. They have performed extensively in music festivals and concert halls throughout Europe.
During their time as artists-in-residence at ‘La Pedrera’, Antoni Gaudi’s famous modernist building in Barcelona, the trio collaborated with Catalan composer José Galeote. They had the pleasure of premiering Galeote’s ‘La Pedrera - En Construcciò’ whilst being inspired by the remarkable architecture.
The trio won first prizes at the ‘Ciutat d’Elx Guitar Festival’ in Spain, the ‘Corelli-Savarez Chamber Music Competition’ in Salzburg, and ‘Valle dei Laghi Guitar Festival‘ in Italy. As Grand Prize winners of the Guitar Foundation of America ‘International Ensemble Competition’, the trio is the first ever ensemble to be awarded a GFA Artist’s Tour, which will take them across the USA and Canada in Spring of 2023. They will also be giving masterclasses at guitar societies and universities.
The trio’s debut album “III“, featuring highlights of their current programme, will be released at the beginning of 2023. Upcoming plans include recording John Duarte’s complete works for guitar trio.
Salzburg Guitar Trio is comprised of Katie Lonson (Canada), Stefan Volpp (Germany) and Andrew Booth (England). The ensemble was originally formed with Izan Rubio (Spain) whilst finalizing their postgraduate solo guitar studies at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria, and was joined by Stefan Volpp in 2020.
